Clever T Shirts Biography
Source:- Google.com.pkJudy Garland: a high-profile personality profiled in countless biographies, articles and documentaries over the last few decades. Like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando, she has remained in the limelight long after her death. Ever since her untimely death in 1969 at the age of 47, Garland has been a focal point for celebrity biographers — a talented, albeit emotionally complex, woman who thrived off attention yet got lost in a whirlwind of pills, alcohol and broken marriages. Her life remains tabloid fodder, even to this day. We still evoke her image when articles are written about talented people — specifically former child stars — who lose themselves in the chaos of Hollywood. As much as we speak of her talent, we also remember her struggles. But who was Judy Garland, really?
Author Christopher Finch tries to answer this question in Rainbow: The Stormy Life of Judy Garland (Grosset & Dunlap, 1979, first edition).
Born Frances Gumm, the youngest of three girls, Garland was a natural-born entertainer. Finch chronologically traces Garland’s rise to fame and fortune, starting with her humble beginning as a vaudeville performer with her family. Nicknamed Baby Gumm (a name that stuck with her until she was well into her teens, much to her chagrin), Garland was a vocal powerhouse with an uncanny talent for mimicry — an ability that ultimately helped her get one foot in the door at MGM when she was 12 years old.
Finch’s biography is still touted as the rare Garland biography that tries to move away from a sole focus on the tragic aspects of her life by introducing thoroughly-researched glimpses of her childhood and later career. In his valiant attempt to understand the woman behind Judy Garland “the performer,” Finch provided fans with what is arguably the first proper documentation of Garland’s life and career. Instead of rushing his book into publication in order to profit from her death, Finch took years crafting his biography and the end result is a character study that provides a wealth of fascinating tidbits.
Although currently out of print, Rainbow is still relatively easy to track down through independent sellers and used book stores. It’s well-worth seeking out, both for Finch’s breezy, engaging prose and his collection of rare photographs, including some gems from Garland’s early childhood. Finch’s attempt to pull the curtain away from one of Hollywood’s greatest legends may have mixed results for some fans, but his ability to move past her fame and present her as the flawed human being that she was is admirable. An obvious fan of her work, Finch resists the temptation to swoon over one of his idols, and instead allows readers to gauge for themselves how they feel about Garland as a person and a performer.
For all her charm and talent, Garland had a darker side. One that made her difficult to work with and lost her many friends and relatives over the years. But Finch plays fair and provides readers with both her light and her dark. Yet, despite all her personal hang-ups, you’d be hard pressed not to let the strings of your heart go zing over this talented, and tragically tormented, woman.
